HEALTHY CULTURE REQUIRES GOOD MANAGERS AND GOOD LEADERS
1. WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? LET’S BREAK IT DOWN.
We took the time to map out our core views on leadership – how do we know what it is, how do we show it in our work, and how do we grow and cultivate it? The result is a simple infographic that serves as a clear guide for leaders (and aspiring leaders) in the organizations and communities we serve to use as they seek to grow their capacity to lead.
2. LEADERSHIP IS A CONTACT SPORT
Marshall Goldsmith is one of the more impactful leadership doers out there. In “Leadership Is A Contact Sport,” Goldsmith and his co-author examine eight companies and their unique leadership development programs.
Their quest? To determine what makes leadership development really stick, and change the way people lead for the better.
The answer? Relationships, repetition, and accountability.
Their core conclusion is pretty straightforward – “If the organization can teach the leader to reach out to co-workers, to listen and learn, and to focus on continuous development, both the leader and the organization will benefit. After all, by following up with colleagues, a leader demonstrates a commitment to self- improvement — and a determination to get better. This process does not have to take a lot of time or money. There’s something far more valuable: contact.”
3. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT?
Leadership and management are different, and equally essential, drivers of purpose-driven organizations. Great organizational culture needs both. It is important to know the diffences and see how essential each quality is. We adapted a small list from “The Wall Street Journal Guide to Management” by Alan Murray.
The manager administers; the leader innovates.
The manager is a copy; the leader is an original.
The manager maintains; the leader develops.
The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on
people.
The manager relies on control; the leader inspires trust.
The manager has a short-range view; the leader has a long-range
perspective.
The manager asks how and when; the leader asks what and why.
The manager has his or her eye always on the bottom line; the leader’s eye
is on the horizon.
The manager imitates; the leader originates.
The manager accepts the status quo; the leader challenges it.
The manager is the classic good soldier; the leader is his or her own person.
The manager does things right; the leader does the right thing.
JOIN US!
Our culture enthusiasts, Serena Fulton and Kathy Greenier, will help you better understand, assess and change aspects of your organization’s culture. We designed this session for a select group of organizational leaders (read: people like you). Space is limited!
Every organization has a culture whether it is intentionally cultivated or not. Culture can be an organization’s biggest pain point or an effective strategy for reaching business outcomes. But what is organizational culture? How do you assess the effects of your own culture? And how might you begin to change it?
In this session, explore the connection between your own organizational purpose, culture, and results – and how to ensure a healthy organizational culture is a lived experience for employees, and not just a theory or concept. Culture challenges can't be solved in a day, but you will leave this session with a tangible first step towards supporting the culture you desire for your organization.
First, participants will get grounded in an understanding of what organizational culture means and each individual will assess their unique organizational needs. Then, we’ll explore culture change strategies and conditions for sustainable and effective change. This session will be a mix of theory and application. Come prepared to learn, engage, and share.
