On Thursday, August 18, 2011 the 7th Annual Designer White Elephant Silent Auction was held at the Hippodrome Theater in Downtown Richmond, Virginia’s Jackson Ward.
Upon pulling in front of the newly renovated venue, gentlemen with bright yellow shirts and fast feet provided valet parking and welcoming service for all attendees. The theater entrance marquee proclaimed the title of the evening’s event and glowed proudly on N 2nd Street.
In the front lobby, volunteers and attendees bustled in -- eagerly peeking past the registration table to see the main room full of auction items.
“This event, which started in Richmond as a tent sale, has grown exponentially and evolved over the years,” explained event Chairperson, Melissa Moseley, CID, ASID, LEED AP of ASID Virginia and local interior design firm, KSA Interiors. “We had an incredible committee of volunteers, amazing donors, and generous sponsors that we can’t thank enough for making this year’s auction a success!”
As a brief history explaining the name of this ever-changing event; interested parties are encouraged to “follow the white elephant” through three main regions of Virginia including Hampton Roads, Richmond, and the Roanoke Valley area. This year, the auction was first held in Virginia Beach, then Richmond, and will be traveling to Roanoke to be held the week of August 22nd. The corresponding Habitat for Humanity in each region is supported by the proceeds raised during each occasion.
Each silent auction features home items, photography, furniture, art, clothing, jewelry and services donated by local commercial and residential designers, businesses, vendors and artisans. This year’s Richmond sale also offered several raffle items as well as a ‘People’s Choice’ catering competition, where attendees had the opportunity to sample food from three local caterers and vote for their favorite. Ettamae’s Café, Nate’s Taco Truck Shop and Thai Corner provided the highly impressive spread for the evening. Taking the prize was Thai Corner – whose recipient generously returned the prize to the cause of the evening.

As someone passionate about Richmond’s creative community continuing to grow and collaborate – I was highly impressed with the atmosphere of this event. From the revitalized venue found in the Hippodrome Theater (which will continue to evolve, so stay tuned), to the more than worthy cause of supporting the Metro Richmond Habitat for Humanity and Virginia Chapter of ASID – I would encourage those who we not able to attend this year’s auction to stay tuned for their next events!
