Good coaches build strong teams. Great coaches challenge every player. The SEALS talk about the 40% Rule – when your mind tells you you’re done, you’re only 40% done. Helping your people stretch into their potential requires both you and your direct reports to demonstrate courage. Courageous conversations – positive but hard talk about developmental stretches or growth, or developmentally tough discussions about behavior, attitude or performance – are the touchstone of every great leader.
